Golfing for Sustainable Change
On Saturday, October 7th, Rhode Island professionals came together to support Renewable Now’s first annual “Golf for Green” Charity Tournament. The beneficiaries of this years’ tournament were Honey for Haiti, Full Swing RI, and Buttonhole Golf Course. Honey for Haiti will be using all funds raised to continue with the implementation of sustainable, income-generating projects at Maison L’Arc-en-Ciel Orphanage in Haiti, benefitting children impacted by HIV/AIDS. Full Swing RI makes golf accessible to children with physical and mental handicaps, and all funds raised will support the purchase of a paramobile, which is an amazing device that allows an individual in a wheelchair to be stood upright at they take their swing. Butthole is Rhode Island’s first and only handicap golf course and provides clinics to veterans as well as making golf affordable for children of all demographics.
The day was packed of friendly yet competitive golf, fun, food, and friends. As players arrived at 9:00 for registration, they were greeted with coffee and breakfast pastries, and given the chance to warm up at Buttonhole’s beautiful driving range, as well as to network with one another. Nearly every player at the tournament worked in a field relating to sustainability, so there was plenty to discuss as they golfed to support 3 sustainable causes working to make our world a better place.
With players ranging from age seven to their mid eighties, Golf for Green was truly an event for all ages. Players were given the opportunity to participate in contests with the chance to win both a Cardi’s Furniture Store gift certificate and Boston Red Sox tickets for the upcoming season. After players completed their nine holes, they joined Peter Arpin of Renewable Now for a sustainable BBQ with live music, as they anxiously awaited to hear who had one the tournament.
The champion of this year’s Golf for Green Charity Tournament was Team Almonte of Grant Thornton USA with a score of 25. Following closely in second, with a score of 27, was Team Boston Green Fest, playing on behalf of the Rhode Island Chapter of the US Green Building Council. Team Almonte will hold the Golf for Green Trophy for the year and will be invited back to defend their title at next year’s event.
